About Your Hosts
Welcome to Birch Bark Lodge. We are excited to invite you to our dream. We are Mike and Kim Pierson. We are originally from Pequot Lakes, Minnesota and have been married for 31 years. We have three grown children, four grandchildren and Hazel our dog.

We have taken this time in our lives to step back from our careers in construction and medical imaging to make a dream into a reality.

We have always loved Canadian fishing and previously owned a cabin in Atikoken Ontario. We found that it was very rewarding to bring people up to our cabin to enjoy the wildlife and excellent fishing.
Kim and I are making a dream come true as we start our Northern Ontario adventure at Wigwascence Lake. After several years of searching for remote properties, we have found our little slice of heaven at Birch Bark Lodge. We want to invite others to live our dream with us. Our goal is to provide a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere that calls you back year after year. We look forward to meeting you as you travel to this pristine wilderness to create unforgettable memories for years to come

Angling Edge visited our lodge to film their TV show. Read about their amazing fishing experience below!

“We just returned from a great fly-in fishing trip to Northwest Ontario, Canada out of Birch Bark Lodge on Wigwascene Lake. It’s an incredible location – we took the tar as far north as the road goes to Pickle Lake and from there jumped into a float plane for an hour flight north.

Jeremy Smith, Ty Sjodin, and Jim Grover made the trip and the fishing was nothing short of spectacular. Many people have had 100 fish days at Birch Bark, but our average catch number each day was in the multiple hundreds – I’m not kidding! Unfortunately we didn’t bring a clicker, but the last 10 minutes of our trip we kept track and we had 10 fish in 10 minutes and that was the standard bite all day everyday!!! We started fishing walleyes and the fishing was very good, then switched out attention to pike. The amazing thing is, when we changed from walleye sized baits to big pike baits the walleye fishing got even better. It’s the first place any of us have been where you could actually consider 19 inch walleyes a nuisance!

It’s been a number of years since we’ve done a fly-in and forgot how amazing un-pressured fisheries really are. Of course, the fishing is the major reason why we choose destinations, but the atmosphere also plays a huge part in the experience.

The best way to describe Birch Bark Lodge is a Deluxe Outpost. Mike and Kim, the owners, are awesome people who take great care of you. They plan meals around your schedule and make sure you have everything you need. If anyone is looking for a place where literally tons of nice walleyes come with very little effort and giant pike are a possibility any cast, you should seriously consider Birch Bark Lodge. Hands down the best walleye action we have experienced with very nice fish.”

Birch Bark Lodge on lake Wigwascence opened in 2015, I had the privilege of being one of the first persons on the lake in 2016 and one of the last parties fishing the lake in the fall of 2016. I have never fished a better walleye fishery!! In one hour in one location, our boat caught a 2.5 to 3 pound walleye with every cast for the first 20 minutes. For the next 20 minutes, it took two casts to catch 2.5 to 3 pound walleyes. Finally in the last 20 minutes and still without leaving that same fishing hole, it took 3 casts to catch a 2.5 to 3 pound walleyes.

I also have never had better fly-in fishing accommodations, or better hosts than Mike and Kim the owners. I have another spring trip planned in 2017.

I’ve had the fortune of fishing more bodies of water in the US and Canada than most, and I must say, Birch Bark Lodge has a really hot bite. Our trip here produced the best walleye action any of us had experienced. The cool thing was, they weren’t 14″ walleye. Countless walleyes a day with most all 18″ and bigger with some real dandies. You seriously have walleyes biting anything you use including big pike baits all the time!! You’ll also want to target pike while your here, the system holds some true giants

Aside from the fishing Mike and Kim are phenomenal hosts. The setting is ultra remote, but Mike and Kim make sure you have everything you need. They let you set the pace of your trip and are there to do as much or as little as you want. Birch Bark Lodge has great fishing, a great setting. great food and great hosts. If you want a great Ontario fly-in experience, I’d strongly recommend Birch Bark Lodge. Its the best place I’ve been for quality walleye action!!

The Real Deal TV show came to Birch Bark Lodge for a moose hunt/fishing trip. From the moment our feet hit the dock to the second we left we were thrilled with our experience. Mike and Kim run a REALLY incredible camp. This is a remote camp, so being that remote you might not expect running water (not only at the shower, but even at the fish cleaning station, cabin and lodge) Nor would one expect a walk in meat cooler to keep your moose and other perishables fresh and cool. The last thing anyone would expect at a remote fly in camp would be a SAUNA….yes a sauna.

-Large cabins, very clean and comfortable
-Meals were outstanding (I’ve stayed at 4 and 5 star resorts and not eaten that well)
-The entire lake to yourself. No other fishing/hunting pressure from anyone else
-I would bring my family here in a heartbeat!!
-If you come once you will probably want to book again
