There are a lot of options in Southern Alberta for Guided Fly Fishing trips. We may be the new guys on the block but we pride ourselves in offering a little something different. Rex Thomas - Head Guide/Owner
My name is Rex Thomas. I am 37 years old, born and raised in the Kootenays in BC and spent a number of years in Squamish/Whistler and the Fraser Valley. I have been fly fishing for 28yrs. I grew up targeting trout and char in Eastern BC and Western Alberta. Later I spent time learning how to fish two-handed rods for steelhead and salmon. Now I'm here in beautiful Alberta looking to put you on some of our finest Trout and Char. When fishing on my own I strive to cover, research and study as much new and different water as possible. Here in Calgary we are lucky to have the Bow River, and it's phenomenal blue ribbon fishery, right at our fingertips. However, my favourite days are out targeting small water brown trout, sight fishing big bull trout or throwing dry flies in the dark. I have been a High Performance Ski Coach for over 18 years and educating people is in my blood. It's what I love more than anything. Refining skills, passing on knowledge and seeing success in others is my true happy place.

My favourite food is a good craft brewed IPA........... that's a food right?

Evan Medd - First Guide
My name is Evan Medd, I am 27 years old was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. I'm fortunate enough to have the Bow River running through my back yard, so I fish the Bow about 100 days out of the year when I'm not exploring our Northern or Southern waters. I spent the summer of 2016 guiding at North Haven Lodge in Northern Manitoba looking for big toothy pike and walleye. A couple of my favourite fish to target from the trout species would be the brown trout and the bull trout. When the weather isn't the best I spend a lot of time tying flies. I'm lucky enough that my girlfriend enjoys fishing just as much as I do and getting to hit the water with her is always a treat. I love spending the days working the small waters hunting the undercut banks looking for rising snouts, or being in the mountains chucking meat in search of the creature that lurks in the depths.

My favourite food is pizza.

Steelhead Fishing Vancouver Island is some of the most incredible sportfishing on the planet. With year round guided fishing trips for salmon, steelhead and trout, no matter what time ... moreof year you choose to visit we have an adventure of a lifetime waiting for you. Whether you're looking to go with one of our fly fishing guides or use gear to catch a migrating salmon heading up the river to spawn, late August is the beginning of our mighty salmon run for Coho, Chinook and Chum and this continues through September, October and even the beginning of November.

Hi There, my name is Alex West and if you're looking for a BC fishing guide you've come to the right place. I'll be your guide on this adventure! With 15 years fishing Vancouver Island Rivers I've learned to love and respect salmon, steelhead and trout, and to of course catch them.

From an early age I've been learning the best techniques to landing trophy fish and I enjoy sharing this with others. I fish year round but when winter hits the island I'm in full time fishing mode. I've fished all over the world (including Costa Rica- see picture!) but I'm so lucky to call Vancouver Island home and I'm glad to always say I'm a BC fishing guide. No matter where I go fishing enthusiasts the world over know BC is the place to be if you love fishing.

Winter Run Steelhead Fishing Vancouver Island
Soon after the salmon enter the river, the first few winter run start their journey home as well. From December through April most south Vancouver Island rivers are filling up with these beautiful chrome fish. As the winter rains move the fish higher up into their native streams this is when I'm on the river full time helping clients to master the craft of angling for these large fresh steelhead.

Adventuring into the chilly rivers takes a special kind of person, one who is passionate about steelhead fishing! Trust me, when you feel that tug, surrounded by clean fresh air, and an island rain on your face, you will never feel more alive.

The fish are plentiful and they're waiting to bite your line. Whether you're new to fishing or have years of experience fly fishing, we can help maximize your chances on these rivers.

In the Spring we switch our focus from Steelhead fishing Vancouver Island to Trout Fishing
As the spring hits south Vancouver Island, we turn our attention to the trout fishing. April and May can be a magical time of year when the trout await the beginning of the bug hatches on the rivers and lakes. This fishery continues into the summer months until the weather turns too hot for fishing as the warm low water is very stressful on these trout. That being said the few rivers that have a summer run of steelhead will slowly enter their home streams awaiting for any bit of rain so they can push up stream. This is a great time to target summer run on the fly. The low water makes sight fishing these magnificent beasts a blast. When the sun is out just the beauty of being on a stream this time of year is worth it's wait in gold and every angler should enjoy this at least once in a lifetime.

Port Renfrew Fishing
When you think about world class sport angling Port Renfrew fishing should be at the top of your list. Most people think of Port Renfrew as a off shore fishing destination but let me tell you it has some incredible freshwater opportunities for salmon, steelhead and trout. With half a dozen river systems all within an hour drive Port Renfrew has your year round fishing needs covered.

The San Juan River is the largest of the bunch and offers great fishing for coho, chinook, and chum in the fall and steelhead in the winter and early spring.

For more angling opportunity we fish the Gordon River, Harris Creek and Caycuse River. Access to these rivers is extremely limited so hiring a guide is your best bet to catch your fill of fish since we know the local area well and can get you into spots not known to others. Inflatable rafts are my choice for navigating the bigger rivers as they are light weight and easily maneuverable, which is absolutely key. We also do a fair share of hiking since rafting might not be an option because weather is very unpredictable and river levels change daily.

Port Renfrew fishing weather
Anglers looking to fish the summer runs of steelhead beginning end of may into the summer months of June July and August should know that it’s largely dependent on water levels and can change daily. You can have an amazing fishing adventure using Port Renfrew as a starting point to the Gordon and Caycuse Rivers. These fresh hard fighting fish are aggressive and eager to bite as we hunt for chrome and spot them in the low clear water.

Getting to your Port Renfrew Fishing Adventure
You have a few choices depending on where you're coming from. If you're driving from Victoria of South Vancouver Island travel east to the town of Sooke. Then from Sooke you're about a hours drive north to downtown Port Renfrew.

If you're coming from mid or north island to the highway take highway 18 to the town of Lake Cowichan, then take Pacific Marine Rd and enjoy the scenic drive following the Harris Creek, which also then flows into the San Juan before making it's way to the ocean. Pacific Marine Rd will take you all the way to the town of Port Renfrew.

The Town of Port Renfrew
Port Renfrew is a tiny place but it comes alive during fishing season. There are few great places to eat and our favourite is the Coastal Kitchen. There are three good places to relax with a good meal after a long day of fishing.

Cowichan River Fishing
While the Cowichan River fishing is what brings you here it’s definitely not the only attraction. When you think of sunshine, clear water and the longest growing season in Canada, the Cowichan valley comes to mind. Named by the Coast -Salish first nations people Cowichan means the land warmed by the sun and this is certainly true in the summer months as the valley has more than it’s fair share of above average temperature days every year.

The region’s unofficial capital is Duncan and it’s downtown core is full of hidden gems to explore. There’s a thriving local art and music scene and dozens of outdoor activities, hiking, biking, canoe and kayaking just to name a few. There are also three dozen totem poles, the world’s largest collection.

After a long day Cowichan river fishing or just enjoying the sights, Duncan’s culinary tourism has been on the upswing for years. If you’re as much of a foodie as I am, you’ll be pleased with the array of quality cuisine.

The Cowichan valley is also the starting point of your amazing Cowichan River Fishing adventure. From the town of Duncan you’re within a stones throw from the lower and very productive reaches of the cowichan river where 90% of the salmon and steelhead will pass through on their migration home to spawn.

They say it’s also the finest trout stream on Vancouver Island and one of the best in the whole province of British Columbia, and I agree! This is due to the unique ecosystem and abundant insects and crustaceans. It also hosts the unique introduced species of brown trout, which exciting to us passionate anglers.

How to get to the best Cowichan River fishing spots:
Travelling the 47km long river from cowichan Bay to the headwaters Lake Cowichan there’s several routes you can take. If you’re pressed for time the highway would be the best bet, but those of you looking for the scenic route River Bottom Road takes the long way around, but it’s very worth the drive. You’ll navigate the windy road following the historical Cowichan River, passing by several great fishing spots, picnic areas and overnight camping spots, before entering the small community of Lake Cowichan. Once you’re in the Lake Cowichan they have everything you need for a comfortable stay or a quick visit. Gord’s fly box is located on the main drag, for all your last minute fishing gear you might need. Lake Cowichan is also the last fuel stop before driving on to Port Renfrew or Sooke, which would make a beautiful drive as you look for bears and elk along the way.

If Lake Cowichan is as far as you’d like to travel on your fishing adventure I highly recommend a stay at the Cowichan Riverside Cottage. Brenda will make you feel right at home as you get a good night’s rest for your next day of exploration.

The Cowichan river fishing is open to fly fishing in the upper portion from the weir on the Lake Cowichan to the Mile 66 Trestle.

Please note all packages for Salmon, Trout or Steelhead Charters can be customized to suit your needs.

Prestige Sportfishing is located in the small town of Harrison Mills, BC along the banks of the pristine Harrison River, a tributary of the mighty Fraser. Our home office is just 2 ... morekm away from our local boat launch at Kilby Provincial Park. This is a central fishing location not only for the Harrison River, which boasts large fall salmon runs and incredible sturgeon fishing, but for the Fraser River as well. The Fraser River is just a short 1 km jet boat ride down river. Our location is just moments away from many of the famed golf courses, tremendous lodging facilities, and other popular attractions.

You are riding shotgun and fishing in boats of high quailty and great finish. Each one of our boats range from 20-25 feet in length, they are fully covered, heated, have ample room for fishing, and each are equipped with all required saftey equipment. It is protocol for each one of our boats to be equipped with all required fishing tackle and bait for your outing. When you book a charter with us you are ensured a clean boat. On our fly fishing charters we often run our "fly boats" which are flat bottom 16-18 foot jet boats which allow us to get to the hard to reach areas where no other vessel can go. This gives us a unique advantage over other guides as we are the only company on the Fraser River running these boats. There is more often than not a pile of fish waiting here to attack your fly. This is just another one of many reasons that makes Prestige Sportfishing stand ahead of the competition.

Each guide at Prestige Sportfishing is professional, and courteous. Prestige guides will always be ontime for charters, treat customers with respect, and will be courteous at all times. Our guides are some of the best rods in the Fraser Valley, are known to put clients into fish constistantly and are known for some great catches. All of our guides are great anglers of 18-42 years of experience for all species and methods, but each does specialize in one of our techniques or species. We have expert fly guides on staff that have been fly fishing the Fraser Valley and its tributaries for over 30 years. There is no question that our fly fishing charters show amazing results, these guys know every spot in the valley!

At Prestige Sportfishing we take great pride knowing that our "Sturgeon Division" are leaders at sturgeon fishing on the Fraser River. Our guides are among the very best on the river, we are known for putting customers into larger fish regularily, and for our hook up consistancy. Compared to most of our competitors, Prestige Sportfishing is not afraid to go the distance to put our clients into fish and give them the best chance at hooking up. We have high standards on what an outing should be like. With this in mind, our guides have the best results imaginable.

Sturgeon are often overlooked by anglers, as they are thought to be a large lazy sucker fish. The best parts of fishing for sturgeon are the incredibly hard battles with these monsters and the terrific aerial shows that they put on.

Sturgeon fishing in the Fraser River area of British Columbia is considered to be world class. The Fraser River area is one of the largest sturgeon production areas in the world. Given this factor, it offers anglers from across the globe the opportunity to consistently hook into these prehistoric fish 12 months of the year. A common size for sturgeon is 4 to 6 feet in length with several larger fish in the 7 to 10 foot range hooked throughout the season. Sturgeon are well known for their long hard runs peeling up to 200 yards of line off, usually leading to big tail walking jumps

While sturgeon fishing is a year round fishery on the Fraser River, we do have some peak times. April thru December are the most consistant of times on the Fraser River for Sturgeon. We have peak periods in the spring (April/Early May) when we have an eulachon run which strike the sturgeon to feed heavily and again in the fall (September-December) when the salmon are running and spawn, another great food source time which strike the Sturgeon to feed heavily and offer us some very amazing days on the water. June thru November is our prime time for catching larger sturgeon in the 7-10 foot range, and these fish are very common on our charters during this time. May-August is steady fishing with many awesome days on the river.

SALMON FISHING - The Best River Fishing For Salmon In The World
Can you imagine catching sockeye salmon on spinning gear, a Chinook salmon over 60 pounds on casting gear? How about hooking multiple chum, coho, and pink salmon on a fly rod? You can do it all here on the Fraser River, with our team of fishing guides who are dedicated to assure you success.

These 5 species of pacific salmon each return at different times throughout the season, beginning in early July, and ending at the end of November. This allows anglers from all over the world, the opportunity to fish for these great fish at their convenience. The salmon fishery is world class, providing excellent results to those who fish this river. Due to having multiple fish species in the river, this allows anglers to use various methods to target salmon. A very successful method is fly fishing, but just as successful is terminal gear fishing. All breeds of anglers have the opportunity to fish the Fraser River Valley successfully.

Salmon Species
Chinook salmon are the largest of the pacific salmon. These fish are a spectacular strong fight on casting gear. Their average size is 20-25 pounds, fish over 30 pounds are common, with the possibility of hooking them over 50 pounds. We target Chinook from mid July thru October.

Chum salmon are a hard fighting salmon which return each year to our river systems in October. The peak period for chum salmon is from early October thru November. Chum are targeted on both spin casting jigs, fly fishing and spey fishnig. Chum fight heavy for their size and average from 8-14lbs, but can be as large as 20lbs.

Sockeye salmon normally arrive in August and we pursue them in their peak period of mid August to September on spinning gear, and on the fly on the Harrison River. These fish are wicked fighters, acrobatic, and full of spunk!

Coho salmon are great both on spin casting hardware and the fly. They are very aggressive fish and are well known for their hard runs with lots of air time, especially their spinning air jumps! Expect to see these salmon in our river systems from October to Late November with peak times being from mid October to the end of November! Average sized coho are from 8-12lbs, but hooking trophies in the 15-20lb range is very common.

Pink salmon are the most plentiful of the salmon species. With over 25 million pinks projected to enter our rivers, expect phenomenal fishing. Pinks return on odd numbered years (2015,2017). We target pinks yet again with spin casting jigs and spoons and fly fishing. They average 4-6lbs and are a decent fight. Your arms will be sore after hooking so many of these salmon. It's great fishing for all ages!

Please remember to purchase a fishing license before you begin your fishing adventure with us. Salmon, sturgeon and trout tags are also required.
